HOPR Parking Etiquette in UCSB & Isla Vista
HOPR uses dockless bike share technology which means you are not restricted to docking stations when parking your bike. However, the line can seem blurry when it comes to where you’re allowed and not allowed to park.
Don’t worry, we are here to help clarify the parking rules for the HOPR bikes around UCSB and Isla Vista.
Where to Park
When riding with HOPR you can park your bike at any HOPR Pond (designated parking zones) located within the system area. HOPR Ponds can be easily located by using the HOPR Transit App or by signage on the street. Not all HOPR Ponds have signage so the app is your most trusted companion in this situation. HOPR Ponds are indicated on the app’s map by a ‘P’ and a green shaded area. Parking outside of a HOPR Pond is possible but you will be charged an Out-of-Pond Fee. If parking outside a HOPR Pond ensure that you are complying with local laws and your bicycle doesn’t block the pedestrian right of way or obstruct traffic. Please consider the width of wheelchairs and strollers.
Always park HOPR bicycles in a manner that keeps pedestrian pathways safe and clear for all users.
How to Park
Once you’ve arrived at your destination, parked appropriately in a HOPR Pond and are ready to end your trip, lock the bike by using the frame lock on the rear wheel. You can not end your ride without manually pushing down on the frame lock. Use the kickstand to keep your bike upright. Your trip is now over and the bicycle is once again available through the app for use by all registered HOPR users.
HOPR Parking Fees
Before riding with HOPR, you should familiarize yourself with the system area map, available on the HOPR Transit App and HOPR website.
Out-of-Pond Fee: $2
To ensure you are not subject to a $2 Out-of-Pond fee end your ride at a HOPR Pond indicated on the app’s map with a ‘P’.
Out-of-System Fee: $20
The system area is outlined with a grey boundary line and includes Isla Vista, the UCSB Campus, Hope Ranch, and Mission Canyon. If parking outside of the system area you are subject to a $20 out-of-system area fee.
Restricted Area Fee: $20
You will see areas on the map outlined with a red boundary line. These are restricted zones and parking in these areas is subject to a $20 fee.
Parking tip:
When ending your ride you will be prompted to take a picture of your parked bike. This is optional, but should you mistakenly be charged a parking fee your photo will help speed up the refund process.
